Holiday Garbage Collection Schedule

Tyler Solid Waste is the Commercial Division of the City of Tyler Solid Waste Department. We are owned by you, our customer. We deliver reliable commercial waste collection service with high customer satisfaction as our goal.

We offer hand pickup service for small businesses to 40-yard compactor containers for larger businesses. Tyler Solid Waste can provide you with a solid waste disposal plan that will give you excellent service at competitive prices. We also offer convenient one check billing with your water utility statement.

We offer pickups from one to six days per week. Our container sizes range from two cubic yards to eight cubic yards. We also have a wide variety of compactors available ranging from 30 to 42 cubic yards.

History of "Going Automated"
The Solid Waste Department has been exploring the use of automated garbage trucks with garbage carts since 1994 to see if this program would save time and money while still providing excellent customer service. An outstanding majority of customers in the 2003 pilot area thought it was a great program. Since that time more and more customers were renting a garbage cart.

In October 2006, the Tyler City Council recognized that more than half of all solid waste customers were using a cart and approved to convert the entire city to Automated Garbage Collection.

Why Go Automated?
This new system is faster, more efficient and safer for your garbage men because the garbage truck’s mechanical arm picks up your wheeled garbage cart and dumps it. You will receive a 96-gallon cart unless you would like a 65-gallon or 48-gallon cart. Please call our office at 903-531-1388 for a different size.

The 96-gallon cart holds 3 times the size of a garbage can, is more sanitary, provides a place to store trash between collection days, prevents garbage from being scattered by the wind, keeps animals out of your trash and provides a clean, uniform look in your neighborhood.

There is no change in your garbage collection days. Carts will be emptied on Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday depending on your pickup day. Please note that the carts are for household garbage only. Please do not place yard waste in the cart. The cart will be assigned to your address, so if you move please leave the cart.

The landfill is operated by Allied Waste Systems and the land is owned by the City of Tyler.

City of Tyler residents may deposit one 3 cubic yard load (about the size of a pickup truck bed) of garbage per month at no charge by presenting a current original City of Tyler Utility Bill and valid driver’s license that has the same address. Appliances and tires are not included and have special pricing.

Additional deposits of refuse are charged at the posted gate rate which is $6.75 per cubic yard (includes the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality fee).

Everyone is required by law to cover their load of refuse during the trip to the landfill. Canvas tarps or heavy plastic covers can be used to hold the refuse in the vehicle and prevent debris from falling out and littering the roadside. If your load is not covered you will face a $25 surcharge at the landfill.

The landfill is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day and may be closed on other legal holidays.

Household hazardous waste, in quantities of one gallon or less, may be disposed of as household garbage.

Liquids should be placed separate from the rest of your garbage, so that our crews will be aware that they are picking up household chemicals.

Paint must be dried out before being placed at the curb to prevent the paint from exploding when it is compacted in the garbage truck. It will dry out by pouring two quarts of Oil Dry Absorbent or Kitty Litter into a half gallon of paint. Stir with a stick and leave the top off to allow it to dry. When you can hold the can upside down wand no paint pours out, then it is ready to go in your trash. Oil dry is available at any grocery store, discount store or auto supply store. It is also available inone gallon baggies at the Tyler Recycling Collection Center or may be purchased at auto parts stores.

Car batteries may be left on the curb on your garbage day and they will be picked up and recycled.
Rechargable batteries can be taken to Batteries Plus, located 4906 Broadway Ave. and recycled for free.

Motor Oil that is less than five gallons from non-commercial users can be taken to any auto service shop at no charge to you.

To avoid excessive household hazardous waste, residents are asked to use safer alternatives and to purchase only amounts needed.
