HUD- VA Supportive Housing Program

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) program was developed to provide case management and supportive services paired with a Housing Choice Voucher to eligible homeless Veterans.

HUD-VASH case managers work to maintain Veterans recovery and independence.

HUD-VASH has the opportunity to provide permanent, stable, and safe housing to homeless Veterans.

How to apply…

The Veteran must first enroll in the VA Healthcare system. The Veteran will be screened for housing through the Universal Screening process.  The Veteran will contact John Smith, LCSW at 903-590-3061 or 214-690-5350 for the screening. The Veteran can also contact Romya Turner, LCSW at 903-590-0852 or Elaine Evans, LCSW at 903-227-2470. The Veteran will be placed on the interest list and the VA caseworkers will then refer the Veteran to the Tyler Housing Agency when the Housing Voucher is available.

Housing Agency requirements:

  • Meet income requirements (depends on household composition)
  • Cannot be registered as a lifetime sex offender

VA Requirements for Veteran:

  • Homeless (McKinney Act Definition)
  • Needs case management to obtain and sustain independently housed in the community
  • Must agree to participate in the case management portion of the program

Major reasons why Veterans exit HUD-VASH:

  • Veteran no longer needs case management or voucher
  • Veteran refuses to participate in case management

  • Veteran is incarcerated

  • Veteran loses voucher due to PHA rule violation

  • Veteran evicted from housing unit

All reasonable efforts will be made to assist Veteran to keep the Veteran involved in the Program, unless program not needed.
