What is a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)?

Federal law requires that a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) be designated for each urban area with a population of 50,000 or more. The MPO will provide a continuing, cooperative, and comprehensive transportation planning process that results in plans and programs that consider all transportation modes and supports metropolitan community development and social goals. These plans and programs shall lead to the development and operation of an integrated, intermodal transportation system that facilitates the efficient, economic movement of people and goods.

There are 25 MPOs in Texas. Each of the MPOs receive federal funding for transportation planning. Many also receive state and local funds as well in order to carry out their mandated planning activities. (www.texasmpos.org).

A Transportation Policy Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, May 24th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.  The meeting will be held in the Tyler Development Center Large Conference Room at 423 W. Ferguson Street, Tyler, Texas.

The Policy Committee will consider approving consider approving a new Memorandum Of Understanding with Tyler Transit and TxDOT making provision of cooperative mutual responsibilities in carrying out the Metropolitan Planning Process and Performance Based Planning and Programming in the Tyler Metropolitan Planning Area and to consider adopting the Fiscal Year 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). 

This public notice of public involvement activities and time established for public review and comments on the TIP development process will satisfy the FTA's program of the project requirements. 

The public is invited to comment on proposed changes to the MPO's Public Participation Plan (PPP) which outlines the public outreach methods the MPO will use when notifying of transportation projects. The draft of the updates is available for review HERE. A 45-day public comment period for the PPP revisions will be held through June 22, 2018.
