Tyler Pipe nominated for enterprise zone

by Susan Guthrie - February 10, 2010

At their meeting on Feb. 10, the Tyler City Council unanimously approved the adoption of a resolution nominating Tyler Pipe (McWane, Incorporated) for award of a State of Texas Enterprise Zone project designation.

The designation, if approved by the State of Texas, would make Tyler Pipe eligible for a refund of state sales and use taxes paid for expenditures on a planned $20 million capital investment at their facility located at 11910 CR 492.

“The City is permitted to nominate up to six enterprise zones each biennium because of our population,” said Mayor Barbara Bass.  “This is a perfect use of this tool to assist a company that is committed to reinvesting in our community and remaining a major employer.”

This will be the second nomination the City of Tyler has made during this biennium; the first was Brookshires. The State Enterprise Zone Act requires that the City of Tyler nominate Tyler Pipe because it is located within the City’s extra territorial jurisdiction.

Tyler Pipe designs and develops cast iron soil pipes and fittings for distribution throughout the United States.  The local facility employs 360 workers and the investment will allow for the enhancement of current manufacturing capabilities.

The planned investment of approximately $20 million into the Smith County facility over the next five years will be used for items such as a fork truck and automotive purchases, equipment rentals, maintenance materials, purchased services, office supplies and expenses, expendable tooling, safety supplies, advertising, general supplies and professional services.
