Sculpture, Dance, Fine Art all Part of March 18 ArtWalk Downtown

by Susan Guthrie - March 15, 2010

Downtown Tyler will come alive with the arts on Thursday, March 18 as the City of Tyler’s Main Street Program and the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition (DTAC) host downtown’s second ArtWalk from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the downtown area.

During ArtWalk, a variety of downtown buildings will be host to one or more artists whose work was selected for exhibit by a DTAC committee. Everything from large-scale metal sculpture to traditional watercolor will be on exhibit.

In addition to static art displays, two artists will demonstrate pottery throwing technique on the T.B. Butler Plaza. A youth dance group, Fly Kids, under direction of Kathy Wood, will perform throughout the evening.

Another new feature of ArtWalk will be the inclusion of short films, which will be shown in the Ron Mabry Conference Room of Gallery Main Street at 110 W. Erwin. Former winners of the local No Name Film Fest will be shown by members of DTAC’s filmmakers group.

“This is only our second ArtWalk, but we have already grown a great degree,” said Tyler Main Street Director Beverly Abell. “Not only do we have the same high level of art on display, but now we have all of these interactive and performing arts on exhibit for the enjoyment of the public,” Abell said.

It is recommended that visitors stop at the gallery first to pick up a map that indicates where all of the artists and venues will be located. Artists include: Anup Bhandari, acrylic; Cissy Boyd, ceramic; Patricia Canfield, watercolor; Dave Funk, ceramic demonstration; Joan Iverson, ceramic demonstration and Bobbye Koncak, watercolor.

Also exhibiting will be Dolph Miller, photography; Jennifer Moreman, acrylic; Mary Celeste Nyberg, ceramic and oil; Sonia Semone, oil and acrylic; Paul Silva, metal sculpture; Briana Sutton, watercolor; ArtReach of the East Rescue Mission, mixed; Derrick White, oil and acrylic; Greg Zeorlin, mixed media and Mary Lynn Bublitz, watercolor.

There is no admission charge to attend ArtWalk, but artwork will be available for purchase.
