Downtown museums celebrate season with joint open house

by Susan Guthrie - December 05, 2008

Downtown Tyler’s museums will celebrate the holiday season with special open house events Thursday, Dec. 11, 4 to 7 p.m. at four museums in the downtown area. Free, come-and-go open houses will be held at:

  • the Goodman-LeGrand Museum, 624 N. Broadway;
  • the Cotton Belt Depot, 210 E. Oakwood;
  • Discovery Science Place, 308 N. Broadway; and,
  • the Smith County Historical Society, 125 South College.

“Downtown Tyler is the home of some outstanding museum facilities, and the public has the opportunity to see each one and celebrate the holiday season at the same time,”  said Beverly Abell, Tyler Main Street Program director. “Each museum will hold special activities that highlight the mission of each facility.”

The Goodman-LeGrand Museum will feature a Victorian Christmas theme, with costumed re-enactors portraying members of the Goodman family and friends. Period treats such as wassail, shortbread and gingerbread will be served, and live musical performances will be featured. The museum is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Cotton Belt Depot, also on the National Register, will feature miniature train displays set in winter scenes. Volunteers in costume will host the event, which will also feature music and refreshments.

Children will be able to learn about the “Science of the Season” at Discovery Science Place. Everything from the glow of a candle to the environmental impact of Christmas trees will be demonstrated in an entertaining fashion via hands-on activities such as making simple snowballs.

At another National Register historic site, the Smith County Historical Society (housed in the old Carnegie building) will serve refreshments and show visitors a photo exhibit of past Christmases in Tyler.

In addition, the Tyler RIP Club will offer “Spirits of Christmas Past” tours, which will start at the T.B. Butler Plaza.
