On Saturday, March 20, girls age five to twelve are invited to gather at the Tyler Public Library from 10 a.m. to noon for another meeting of the American Girl Reading Club.
March’s meeting will highlight the American Girl heroine Kit Kittredge, whose stories take place during the Great Depression of the 1930s. At the American Girl meeting on March 20, girls will explore history through foods, games, crafts and other activities drawn from the Depression-era.
This month’s program is one part of The Big Read Tyler – a series of events designed to encourage community members to read or re-read John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. Beyond reading the novel, one goal of The Big Read is to inform the community about everyday life during the Dust Bowl and the Depression. The Library has partnered with the East Texas Quilters Guild and Humanities Texas to bring displays of depression-era quilting and photographs of the Dust Bowl to the Library Atrium and Lobby.
The American Girl Reading Club generally meets on the third Saturday of each month in the Library’s Taylor Auditorium, 201 S. College in downtown Tyler. The public is welcome, and no registration or fees are required. For more information, contact the Library by phone at (903) 593-7323 [READ] or email at programs@tylertexas.com.
