City Awards Bid for Construction of South Tyler Pedestrian and Bike Trail

by Susan Guthrie - January 23, 2008

During their meeting on Jan. 23, the Tyler City Council voted unanimously to award the bid to construct the South Tyler Pedestrian and Bike Trail to Reynolds and Kaye, Ltd.  This action paves the way for construction on the trail to begin immediately, with an anticipated completion date of August 2008.

The pedestrian and bike trail encompass more than 2.1 miles and will be constructed of concrete. The trail will be built through areas of natural vegetation; however some additional landscaping, benches, retaining walls and interpretive kiosks will be included with the construction.

The path will connect to the Rose Rudman Trail and continue south toward Grande Boulevard.  It will then head west and terminate just past Royal Oak Drive.

β€œI am very pleased that we are able to move forward with this project,” said Mayor Joey Seeber.  β€œIn the Tyler 21 Plan, developing alternatives to automobile transportation was one of the primary goals of the Transportation and Circulation Plan.  This project is another step toward making pedestrian and bike travel a viable alternative in Tyler.”

Eighty percent of the funding for this project was provided by a grant administered through the Texas Department of Transportation and funded by the Federal Highway Administration.  The City of Tyler will provide the balance of the project cost through funds provided by the Half Cent Sales Tax.  The total cost of the project will be $3.07 million.
