The Patrol Division is responsible for many functions of the department, including patrol, property and vehicle crimes investigations, and crime prevention. The Tyler Police Department has divided the entire City of Tyler into six geographic beats. The Division is commanded by Assistant Chief Steve Sharron. Lieutenants are assigned to each shift and are responsible for the operations on the individual shifts. The Division also includes two substations, the Traffic Unit, SWAT/Negotiations, Bicycle Unit, The Community Response Team, Canine Team, Crimes Against Property and Vehicle Crimes, all commanded by sergeants.
In 2002, the Patrol Division continued its efforts towards community policing. The Crime Prevention Officers (now the Community Response Team) began the 'Ask A Cop' program, which was well received by the community. The patrol officers had great success with dealing with trouble areas within the city, especially drug houses. The patrol officers have done a great job working together to handle the call load.
