The Tyler Police Department is dedicated to controlling crime not only in Tyler but throughout the East Texas community. This is proven by our commitment to several area Crime Task Forces, which are multi-agency groups dedicated to specific criminal problems.
DEA TASK FORCE
The Tyler Police Department is a member of a joint task force with the Drug Enforcement Agency. TPD provides one full-time investigator and one civilian secretary to the task force. This task force works the northeast Texas region focusing on narcotic cases.
EAST TEXAS AUTO THEFT TASK FORCE

The East Texas Auto Theft Task Force is a multi-agency task force which is funded by the Texas Automobile Theft Prevention Authority and administered by the Smith County District Attorney's Office. Its members include four law enforcement officers and one secretary from the following police agencies: Department of Public Safety, Tyler Police Department, Smith County Sheriff's Office, and Rusk County Sheriff's Office.
The East Texas Auto Theft Task Force focuses on a 14 county geographical area, having a population of 756,796, and involving Smith, Rusk, Gregg, Cherokee, Henderson, Harrison, Panola, Rains, Van Zandt, Upshur, Camp, Anderson, Wood and Marion counties. They encompass a total of 9,721 square miles. Officers are often called to assist these area law enforcement officers in auto theft investigations.
The East Texas Auto Theft Task Force officers conduct area H.E.A.T. registration and VIN etching events as well as public awareness speaking engagements as requested.

EAST TEXAS VIOLENT CRIMES TASK FORCE
The East Texas Violent Crimes Task Force is a multi-jurisdictional task force made up of investigators from Tyler Police Department, Smith County Sheriff's Department, Smith County DA'S Office, Gregg County Sheriff's Department, Gregg County DA'S Office, Longview Police Department, Harrison County DA'S Office, Harrison County Sheriff's Department, Marshall Police Department, FBI, United States Marshall's Service, Kilgore Police Department, and the Texas Rangers. The task force is sponsored and funded by the North Texas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, which is a federally funded initiative. The task force will respond to major violent crimes in the entire East Texas region to assist member agencies and at the request of local law enforcement. Crimes that the task force will assist on include but are not limited to kidnapping, carjacking, commercial robberies, gang related or drug related homicide, and terrorism incidents.
