We have an opportunity for you!

Volunteers are a vital part of the Tyler Police Department Family! Serving side-by-side with officers and paid staff, VIPs actively give back to the Tyler community, enjoy a personally fulfilling experience and fill vital roles in the department.

VIPs work in our Crime Scene Unit, Data Management department, Police Services Unit, Training Unit and at our sub-station. They perform services such as processing finger prints, receptionist, data entry, vehicle and gun range maintenance.

Community Service Programs for VIPs include: McGruff The Crime Dog, Citizens On Park Patrol, Handicap Parking Enforcement, Children’s Fingerprinting, HEAT/VIN registration, Holiday Parking Lot Patrol and Traffic Safety Program.

  Volunteer Chaplain Corps

The Tyler Police Department has seven clergypersons in the Volunteer Chaplain Corps. The Chaplains are from various denominations and represent a wide spectrum of ethnicity. The chaplains are on hand to assist the officers, city employees and citizens with counseling and assistance anytime there is a major accident, crime or other traumatic incident.

 Volunteer In The Spotlight

Mary Miner came from a town in Nebraska that was so small the townspeople considered putting the one police officer on a part-time salary!

Mary often delights in telling stories about Doug the Cop from back home where she was a school teacher and librarian for 25 years.

When she came to work as a VIP here in Tyler, she was a natural fit in the Data Management section where her smiling face, her orderliness and her attention to precise details have made her a valuable member of the family.

So, you can imagine the concern over her when a recent accident resulted in a broken hip!

We are all thankful for her quick recovery and fast healing because she is back at full steam.

  We Need You!

We have about 55 VIPs who donated about 8,400 hours of their time in 2008!

There are always things to be done around the Police Department and we are looking for citizens wanting to do something that will be personally fulfilling and provide a direct impact on their community while assisting Tyler’s Police Department.

If you or someone you know has some extra time they would like to donate, please contact Gary Lynch, Volunteer Services Coordinator, at 903-531-1071 or by e-mail to City Email.

We do perform background checks on anyone applying to be a VIP.
