Volunteers are a vital part of the Tyler Police Department Family! Serving side-by-side with officers and paid staff, VIPs actively give back to the Tyler community, enjoy a personally fulfilling experience and fill vital roles in the department.
VIPs work in our Crime Scene Unit, Data Management department, Police Services Unit, Training Unit and at our sub-station. They perform services such as processing finger prints, receptionist, data entry, vehicle and gun range maintenance.
Community Service Programs for VIPs include: McGruff The Crime Dog, Citizens On Park Patrol, Handicap Parking Enforcement, Children’s Fingerprinting, HEAT/VIN registration, Holiday Parking Lot Patrol and Traffic Safety Program.
Volunteer Chaplain Corps
The Tyler Police Department has seven clergypersons in the Volunteer Chaplain Corps. The Chaplains are from various denominations and represent a wide spectrum of ethnicity. The chaplains are on hand to assist the officers, city employees and citizens with counseling and assistance anytime there is a major accident, crime or other traumatic incident.
Volunteer In The Spotlight
When she was young, Edith Geske was told not to expect to live to adulthood — well, she didn’t let that stop her and very little slows this 87-year-young lady.
Anyone who meets her first notices her bright blue eyes that actually twinkle in contrast to her gray hair! Then her warm smile and giving heart will win you over.
During the last year, she worked in Data Management and has been a regular part of that team putting in more than 345 hours.
At the last Citizens Police Academy, she earned the nickname “Machinegun Edith” by amazing everyone when she picked up a Colt 9mm submachine gun and commenced to blast away at the target.
We’ve been missing her lately. She’s been under the weather for a while and is taking it easy, but she will always have a place here at Tyler PD.
We Need You!
We have about 60 VIPs who donated more than 10,000 hours of their time in 2007!
There are always things to be done around the Police Department and we are looking for citizens wanting to do something that will be personally fulfilling and provide a direct impact on their community while assisting Tyler’s Police Department.
If you or someone you know has some extra time they would like to donate, please contact Gary Lynch, Director of Volunteer Services, at 903-531-1071 or by e-mail to City Email.
We do perform background checks on anyone applying to be a VIP.
