Residents living east of Old Jacksonville Highway, south of Troup Highway and McDonald Road (inside Loop 323), and south of 5th Street (outside Loop 323) receive garbage collection on Tuesday and Friday.

What time should I put my garbage out?
Garbage should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. the day of your collection.
The City Ordinance states that containers can be placed at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before collection and must be removed by 7 a.m. the day following collection.

What type of containers should I use for my garbage?
Place your household garbage in the 48-gallon, 65-gallon or 96 gallon city-provided wheeled garbage cart as shown to the right.
Place your curb trash (yard waste) six feet away from your cart on your garbage day.

What is curb trash?
Curb trash includes small BRUSH in containers; limbs 4 feet or less in length  tied in bundles (see picture below); dry leaves and grass which should be placed in plastic bags or waterproof containers (not to exceed 50 pounds per container); also miscellaneous trash (other than household garbage), such as debris from cleaning a garage or closet, broken toys, etc.
Curb trash is collected the same day as your household garbage.

How do I dispose of tires?
Four residential, noncommercial tires will be picked up free of charge at your curb and be recycled. Leave the tires at the curb and they will be picked up sometime during the week.

How do I keep animals out of my trash?
If you are bothered with animals getting into your garbage, before closing plastic bags, pour in one ounce of household ammonia.  This will discourage them from tearing open the bags and scattering the garbage.

How do I dispose of dead animals?
The Solid Waste Department will not pick up dead animals.  If they are placed in a plastic bag secured tightly and placed on the curb, the Health Department will pick them up.  To request a pickup call the Health Department at (903) 535-0045.

How to I dispose of bulky items?
Special pickups are available for people not wanting to tie and bundle brush or having limbs or other objects too large to handle by hand. Prices start at $10 for the first 3 cubic yards and range up to $250 per truck load (40 cubic yards). Refrigerators and air conditioners have special requirements.  Please call (903) 531-1388 to dispose of these items.

When is free bulky item collection week?
Free bulky item collection is held twice yearly once in the spring (early March) and once in the fall (early October). A postcard will be sent to customers with the exact dates prior to each collection.

As a resident, do you have a dumpster I can rent for household projects?
The City of Tyler Solid Waste Department offers an 8 cubic yard container called the Litter Critter.  The Litter Critter is available for use by City residents if eligible, a maximum of 2 times a year.  This container may be used for small home projects such as garage cleanup or spring-cleaning but not for remodeling waste. The Litter Critter may be rented from Friday afternoon until Monday morning, or from Monday afternoon until Friday morning at a cost of $27.75 plus tax, which will be charged to your utility bill. This container is not for commercial use. No liquids, paint, pesticides, household hazardous waste, appliances, chemicals, construction materials or tires are allowed in the container.  A release must be signed before delivery of the container. For more information about the Litter Critter, call (903) 531-1388.

 History of "Going Automated"
The Solid Waste Department has been exploring the use of automated garbage trucks with garbage carts since 1994 to see if this program would save time and money while still providing excellent customer service. An outstanding majority of customers in the 2003 pilot area thought it was a great program. Since that time more and more customers were renting a garbage cart.

In October 2006, the Tyler City Council recognized that more than half of all solid waste customers were using a cart and approved to convert the entire city to Automated Garbage Collection.

Why Go Automated?
This new system is faster, more efficient and safer for your garbage men because the garbage truck’s mechanical arm picks up your wheeled garbage cart and dumps it.  You will receive a 96-gallon cart unless you would like a 65-gallon or 48-gallon cart. Please call our office at 903-531-1388 for a different size.

The 96-gallon cart holds 3 times the size of a garbage can, is more sanitary, provides a place to store trash between collection days, prevents garbage from being scattered by the wind, keeps animals out of your trash and provides a clean, uniform look in your neighborhood.

There is no change in your garbage collection days. Carts will be emptied on Monday and Thursday or Tuesday and Friday depending on your pickup day. Please note that the carts are for household garbage only.  Please do not place yard waste in the cart. The cart will be assigned to your address, so if you move please leave the cart.
