Lake Tyler was constructed in 1949, and covers approximately 2,400 surface acres. This lake has served as the major source of water supply since its construction. Lake Tyler also serves as a major recreation center for this area, under strict sanitary controls. The Lake Tyler Department maintains six recreational areas adjacent to the lake. Lake Tyler is located on Prairie Creek, a tributary of Mud Creek, and lies in the Angelina River watershed. It has storage capacity of over 15 billion gallons (43,500 acre feet) at spillway elevation and has an average depth of 17.6 feet. It has a watershed area of 42 square miles (27,000 acres).

The Lake Tyler department is responsible for maintenance of the surface water supply for the City of Tyler, including dams, spillways, outlet works, and associated appurtenances at Lake Tyler, Lake Tyler East, and Bellwood Lake.
This department also monitors the watershed for active and potential sources of pollution. Other departmental activities include patrolling the lakes to enforce safety and water quality regulations and maintenance of 21 miles of roadway, 6 public parks, and 5 public boat ramps.

The following link provides a court document that is applicable to Lake Tyler East landowners only. Property owners on Lake Tyler East should pay particular attention to Paragraph (u) which specifies the requirements to register the property in their name with the City of Tyler.
Registration should be made through the Department of Water Production and Water Quality at (903) 939-2724.

In accordance with City of Tyler Code of Ordinances, Chapter 19, Article VI, Division 5, Section 19-203, all transfers of leases, including transfers to heirs, must be approved by the City of Tyler. All requests for transfers or Consent to Mortgage must be made in writing, using the following Request Document or a similar type form as long as the requested information is provided. In addition, a list of current lessee's is provided for review prior to initiating a Request for Lease Transfer or Consent to Mortgage.
If the actual current lessee does not match the City's record of current lessee, then it is up to the Requestor to provide documentation showing the chain of transfers. Transfer documents and related fees will be required for each interim transfer to bring the City's records up to date. Please check the lessee list frequently, as it is updated regularly.
The fee schedule is as follows:
- Consent to Mortgage - $75.00 per each
- Lease Transfer - $75.00 per each
- Lease Addendum - $75.00 per each
- Filing Fee (if filed by City) - $25.00 per each
