Tyler recognized for Arbor Day events

At the City Council meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 11, the City of Tyler was recognized with the 2017 Texas Outstanding Arbor Day Celebration Award. The award is given by the Texas Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture to individuals, organizations or municipalities that have promoted Arbor Day through special projects, ceremonies, news articles and or observations with an Arbor Day theme.

The City of Tyler’s Arbor Day event was celebrated on Jan. 21 and brought more than 450 volunteers to Lindsey Park to plant more than 90 trees. It also included the Annual Seedling Giveaway (2,300 trees) and Tyler Junior College tree planting (50 trees). This was Tyler’s largest Arbor Day celebration with over 2,000 attendees total over the three events.

“It’s an honor to receive this award,” said City Arborist Cody Goldman. “The City of Tyler collaborated with many organizations to make this past Arbor Day a huge success and it paid off!”

Next year’s Arbor Day celebrations are already in the works, as it takes many months of planning.
