Our Mission: Downtown Revitalization

Main Street Tyler Texas Logo

The City of Tyler Main Street Program has the mission of creating a vibrant downtown culture and economy. The mission is accomplished through the partnership of the City of Tyler and Heart of Tyler, Inc., who engage volunteers, businesses and the community in implementing programs in Organization, Promotion, Economic Restructuring and Design, all within the context of historic preservation.

The Main Street Department serves as a Downtown Revitalization hub via:

  • Serving as public sector partner to Heart of Tyler
  • Developing volunteer involvement in downtown
  • Managing the Downtown Tyler Arts Coalition
  • Supporting and creating projects dedicated to downtown revitalization

Working in partnership with business owners, property owners, major institutions, government partners, residents and others, the Main Street Department seeks out projects that encourage the continuing revitalization of the historic heart of the community.

Projects include architectural design assistance, historic preservation assistance, a facade grant program, business consultation, development of the arts in Downtown Tyler and more. Volunteers work with staff to produce special events in the downtown area, including the Downtown Tyler Wine Swirl, arts events on the square, original art exhibits at Gallery Main Street, arts workshops, the Downtown Tyler Film Festival and more.

To date, revitalization efforts have resulted in more than $200 million in reinvestment in Downtown Tyler in terms of private-sector property purchases and property renovations in addition to public-sector projects. Downtown Tyler is also the proud recipient of 24 awards for downtown revitalization excellence through the Texas Downtown Association's President's Awards program.

In addition, the Tyler Main Street Program's continuing emphasis on excellence is reflecting on its standing as a Nationally Accredited Main Street program. Each year, Tyler Main Street is evaluated on 10 points of performance that it must meet or exceed. Those points include broad-based public support and partnerships, effective mission and vision, comprehensive and detailed workplan, an historic preservation ethic, an active board of directors and corps of volunteers, adequate operating budget, a professional management staff, continuing education and training for volunteers and staff, reporting of key revitalization data and membership in the national Main Street network.
