Plans take shape for Fire Station 2 replacement

Built in the 1970s, Fire Station 2 has served generations of Tyler firefighters. Now, the City is moving forward with plans to replace the aging station with a facility designed around the space, equipment, and operational needs of today’s fire service. 

On Wednesday, Aug. 12, the City Council approved a $740,470 contract with BRW Architects for the design of the replacement of Fire Station 2. The project is funded through the Half Cent Sales Tax Fund. 

The existing station at 5505 Old Bullard Rd., near the intersection of Old Bullard Road and West Rieck Road, will be demolished and rebuilt on the same site. The City has also acquired the adjacent property at 420 W. Rieck Rd., which will be combined with the existing property to create a larger site for the new station. 

The new Fire Station 2 is anticipated to be approximately 13,500 square feet and will provide additional space for firefighters, equipment, training, and daily operations. Plans include at least three apparatus bays, sleeping accommodations for up to 11 personnel, and dedicated areas for firefighter health and safety, including PPE storage and decontamination. 

The station will include training and fitness spaces, improved living areas for crews, and site improvements designed to support emergency response. 

The design will also evaluate traffic signal pre-emption at Old Bullard Road and West Rieck Road and provide direct access for fire apparatus entering and leaving the station. 

The new station will provide Tyler firefighters with a workspace better suited to current operations while giving the department room to meet future service needs.
