Many of the conversations that help shape Tyler begin before an item reaches the City Council dais. They begin with community members serving on boards and commissions, reviewing issues related to growth, traffic safety, parks, beautification, historic preservation, accessibility, and more.

The City of Tyler is now accepting applications until Monday, Aug. 3, for several City boards and commissions, giving residents an opportunity to take part in those conversations and help guide recommendations that affect the community. The City Council will make appointments at the meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Those appointed will serve voluntarily and without compensation for two-year terms.

“Boards and commissions give residents a meaningful way to take part in local government and help shape decisions that affect our community,” said City Clerk Cassandra Brager. “Filling these vacancies ensures each board has the voices and perspectives needed to provide thoughtful recommendations to the City Council.”

The boards and commissions include:

Regular Boards (Boards that meet monthly or bi-monthly)

  • Airport Advisory Board
  • Half-Cent Sales Tax Board
  • Keep Tyler Beautiful Board
  • Parks Board
  • Planning and Zoning Commission
  • Traffic Safety Board
  • Tyler Historic Preservation Board
  • Tyler Public Library Board

Periodic Boards (Boards that meet only as needed)

  • Animal Care Advisory Board
  • Board of Adjustment (Zoning)
  • Civil Service Commission
  • Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals
  • Disabilities Issue Review Board
  • Main Street Board
  • Neighborhood Revitalization Board

City Board members should generally be residents of Tyler unless otherwise authorized by ordinance. Some board positions may have additional requirements.

Anyone interested in serving can complete an application online at CityofTyler.org.  Applications are also available for pickup at the City Clerk's Office in City Hall, 212 N. Bonner, Tyler, Texas.
