What is the intake process?
When Tyler Animal Control officers bring a dog or cat into the Shelter, it is checked for injuries, illnesses and a microchip.
We test dogs for parvo, heartworms, internal parasites and they receive core vaccines. Cats are tested for FeLV/FIV and given core vaccines. All animals are evaluated to ensure they’re suitable for adoption.
All animals are available for adoption after a 72-hour stay hold unless otherwise stated.
If the animal is microchipped and registered to an owner, we will call the owner to reclaim their pet. If we are unable to reach the owner, the pet is then available for adoption after it has been at the shelter for 72 hours.
What types of animals does the shelter accept?
All animals are accepted, except livestock.
There is a $40 fee for surrendering an animal. Contact us at (903) 535-0045 to learn more.
How many rescue organizations do you work with?
We work with more than 50 rescue organizations across 19 states as placement partners to provide animals with more opportunities to be adopted when there is a lack of interest from people.
Are you able to give me updates on the pet I have surrendered?
We encourage individuals who have dropped off an animal to check through our Animal Control and Shelter Facebook page for updates. If you decide that you would like to reclaim an animal, please contact us at (903) 535-0045.
Cost to surrender or euthanize?
The cost to surrender or euthanize an animal is $40.
How long do you wait before euthanizing an animal?
We strive to find homes for all pets that come into our care. We pride ourselves on having a low percentage of euthanizations and only take this extreme action when the animal is in bad health, will threaten the health of the rest of our kennel, or when it is deemed not adoptable due to aggressive behavior and a rescue organization is not interested/available to rehabilitate the animal.
Do you spay and neuter pets?
Only animals that are being adopted from Tyler Animal Services are spayed or neutered. These services are not offered to the public and their pets.
