As the temperature continues to rise this summer, the Tyler Police Department and Tyler Animal Services are encouraging the community to take preventive measures against the heat for pets. It’s recommended to keep pets indoors during the day, away from hot pavement, and to make sure they have access to fresh water.
These tips can help keep pets safe and cool this time of year:
Never leave animals inside a parked car - Even on a cooler day, temperatures inside an unmanned vehicle can rise rapidly to fatal levels, causing irreversible organ damage or death to your pets. Leaving the air conditioner running is also not safe because engines can fail, and cooling systems can still shut off.
Avoid hot pavement - Asphalt, astroturf, and concrete can reach temperatures up to 120° F in the summer heat. Before walking your pet, perform a “touch test” to prevent them from getting burns.
Be aware of humidity - High humidity can be deadly for pets because dogs and cats cool themselves by panting. When the air contains a lot of humidity, the panting process becomes much less effective. During high-humidity days, keep your pets indoors and make sure they have plenty of water.
If pets are outdoors, City ordinance requires that the animal must be provided with access to proper water and shelter, which consists of an enclosed structure with at least three solid sides with a door opening on the fourth side, a constructed floor, and a roof. It should also be clean, dry, and compatible with the size of the animal. with at least three solid sides with a door opening on the fourth side, a constructed floor, and a roof.
